Well, friends: let me tell you about the time I seriously thought there was a good chance that I wouldn’t make it out of Peru alive.

 

It all started off normally, as these types of stories generally do. I was in Arequipa in the south of Peru, and just like I had done with other tours in other cities, I walked into a travel agency in the plaza and booked a three day trek through the Colca Canyon. The Colca Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA, and is currently considered the second largest canyon in the world. At some parts it reaches over 6000 metres deep- that’s SIX KILOMETRES (3.72823 miles, for you Americans). It is still legal to enter the Colca Canyon without paying a fee or going with a guide, but those laws are changing as it grows in popularity. This…
